The NC dental board has revised the rules for dental assistants who wish to expand their skills by monitoring patients under Nitrous Oxide analgesia. Now, both DA1 and DA2 assistants can monitor patients under the direct supervision of a dentist after taking an approved seven hour course. This is great news! In response, we have added an 11th session included with the 2012 MDA001 class which will complete the requirements for this extra certification. As always, this class is available separately as well. The following is excerpted from the revised rules. 21 NCAC 16O .0402 EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS A Dental Assistant I or a Dental Assistant II not otherwise qualified under G.S. 90-29(c)(13) may aid and assist a licensed dentist in the administration of nitrous oxide-oxygen inhalant conscious sedation after completion of a Board-approved course totalling at least seven hours and directed by an individual or individuals approved by the Board. Such course shall include: (1) Definitions and descriptions of physiological and psychological aspects of pain and anxiety; (2) The states of drug-induced central nervous system depression through all levels of consciousness and unconsciousness, with special emphasis on the distinction between the conscious and unconscious state; (3) Respiratory and circulatory physiology and related anatomy; (4) Pharmacology of agents used in the conscious sedation techniques being taught, including drug interaction and incompatibility; (5) Patient monitoring, with particular attention to vital signs and reflexes related to consciousness; (6) Prevention, recognition and management of complications and life threatening situations that may occur during the use of the conscious sedation techniques, including cardio pulmonary resuscitation; (7) Description and use of ventilation sedation equipment; and (8) Potential health hazards of trace anesthetics, and proposed techniques for elimination of these potential health hazards.

Congratulations to the Winter MDA001 class! We wish you the best of luck in your new dental assisting career!
We are so proud of Anna S. She is a recent graduate of the Dental Staff Institute and is now working in a general dental office in Monroe, NC. Way to go! You will be a great dental assistant!! Other grads, please let us know where you are working. We would love to hear from you!
Did you know that the Dental Staff Institute is one of the only entry level dental assisting programs (DAI program) that includes the Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Monitoring Certification course? We have recently included it into our Saturday 11-Week program so that you have an added certificate upon graduation. Nitrous Oxide Certification is a plus when applying for any dental assisting job, but in particular pediatric dentistry and oral surgery. We are proud to offer this certification class to you, as well as to existing dental assistants and hygienists in North Carolina.

We have had an unprecedented response to our Modern Dental Assisting 11-Week Saturday Course to become a DAI this Summer. We have filled our class beginning in the Fall, 2013, and it is a wonderful group. Keep in mind that we do have a waiting list for this session and we are now accepting registrations for the next session beginning in January 2014. Don’t miss out! We look forward to working with you!

Our instructors are DANB (Dental Assisting National Board) certified which is the highest honor that a Dental Assistant 2 (DAII) can have in the United States. We feel that this is an important aspect of our dental assisting school and sets us apart from the other schools. Our instructors are specially trained to teach you and are available to help any of our graduates become certified when they are ready. We hope that all of our Dental Staff Institute graduates will attain this honor!!

Our instructors are not only DANB certified, but they are also working in the field all week with dentists and their patients. They perform all sorts of procedures routinely, including xrays, braces, Invisalign, surgery, pediatric dentistry, fillings, implants and crowns and dentures. If you do not know what some of these procedures are, you will by the end of our 11-Week Course! We also encourage you to fulfill some of your externship requirements with them upon graduation. See how they work in the real world!
We at the Dental Staff Institute would like to wish all of our amazing graduates and awesome students a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We are so thankful that you chose our school to begin or further your dental adventure! A toast to everyone for a successful and fulfilling 2014! Fondly, Drs. Malz and Woodman, Diana, Lisa and Amy
Guess what?! The Dental Staff Institute is now able to offer a CHALLENGE EXAM for NC Dental Radiography certification. This one-day “course” is open to any dental assistant from another state who already has taken a dental radiography course and is able to send that dental radiography certificate to our school. It is much quicker and less expensive than taking the full two-day North Carolina Dental Radiography certification course. You will not need to sit through a day of lecture, and we give you a textbook to use before the written exam. Easy, breezy!
Due to the higher than normal demand for the upcoming single-day Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Monitoring Certification Course in November, we have added 12 more spots and another lecture room within walking distance to the school. Thanks to all of your feedback we can use this conference room whenever we have a very full class so that we all have more elbow room. We will let you know which room to go to on the morning of the course. The parking lot is the same.

We will not be hosting any more 1-day NC Dental Radiography CHALLENGE EXAM dates in 2016. Anyone needing NC Dental Radiography Certification in 2016 will need to join the 2-day (Saturday/Saturday) course. Please refer back to our website periodically for 2017 CHALLENGE EXAM dates.
